2003 yılında Almanya’da Otto Von Guericke Üniversitesi’nde yapılan bilimsel çalışmada, propolis ve bileşenlerinin, insan hücrelerinde enflamasyona yol açan sitokinlerin üretimini baskılarken, bağışıklık hücrelerinin artmasını sağladığı gösterilmiştir. Bu çalışmada, propolis özütlerinde bulunan hesperidin, quercetin ve kafeik asit fenetil ester (KAFE) bileşenlerinin, insan bağışıklık hücresi fonksiyonları üzerindeki etkileri detaylı olarak araştırılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, incelenen propolis bileşenlerinin, enflamasyona yol açan sitokin türlerini baskıladığı ve lenfositler üzerinde düzenleyici etki gösterdiği tespit edilmiştir. Bu veriler, propolisin bağışıklık sistemini düzenleyici bir etkiye sahip olduğunu göstermektedir. Çalışma sonucunda, araştırmacılar propolisin immünoregülatör (bağışıklığı dengeleyici) etkisiyle, güçlü ve doğal bir antienflamatuar (vücutta iltihap azaltıcı) özellikte olduğunu belirtmişlerdir.
